  • Busy Weekend for HSFM!

    11/12/2009 12:00:00 AM

We have a busy weekend here at HSFM, so please check our our News & Events page for all the details!

First, we have an Adopt-A-Thon this weekend at PetSmart, so come out and meet some of our great animals available for adoption.

Next, if you love chili, or you can cook chili, HD Tavern is having a Chili Cookoff on Saturday.  If you want to show off your award winning recipe, cooking starts at 10am, with judging at 4pm.  There will also be a silent auction.  All proceeds will benefit HSFM.

Finally, when you are on the run this Saturday in Flower Mound, stop at Schlotzsky's and put your receipt in the bucket at the register.  10% of the day's receipts in the bucket will go to HSFM.

  • Pets are not presents

    10/27/2009 12:00:00 AM

The holidays are just around the corner, and we are nearing the time where people think a cute puppy or kitten under the tree is the perfect gift.  But before you put that bow on that furry bundle of joy, take a moment to think about the fact that this a pet is not a gift that should be discarded if the recipient doesn't like it, it is a gift that will be with that person for 10 years or more, and is not easy to return if the pet doesn't "fit."

Don't get us wrong, we are all for adding a pet to your family, no matter what time of year!  So here are some tips to think about this holiday season:

    1. If you know a friend is wanting a pet, consider giving a cute card with an offer to pay an adoption fee and a fun day spent together selecting the right pet for that person.

    2. Many kids hope Santa will bring them their new furry best friend.  Don't give a pet to a child hoping it will teach them responsibility.  Instead, get them involved in the process of picking the right pet for your household, agree on the chores before the pet comes home, and remind them this pet will be with them for many years to come, so it's a very big decision.

    3. Reputable rescue groups, such as HSFM, want both you and the pet to be happy for the years to come.  We spend time before the adoption to make sure the pet is a good match for the new family.  We invest significant vet care to ensure the pet has all his or her health needs addressed, and we will always take one of our adopted animals back into our program if it's just not working.  Before you invest significant money buying a puppy or kitten from someone online or on the side of the road, you should be able to expect the same thing and see proof of it.  Sadly, shelters start overflowing with teenage dogs and cats in February and March, once the recipient realizes they cannot handle a pet and don't have anywhere else to turn.

    4. Adopt!  The holidays are a season of giving, so please give a deserving dog or cat a chance at a happy lifetime.

  • A Sad Loss for the HSFM Family

    6/10/2009 12:00:00 AM

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that HSFM has lost a dear member of our family.  Maxine Morgan, co-founder of the Humane Society of Flower Mound, passed away Monday afternoon after a long fight with cancer.

Maxine and Stacy Smith, our other founder and VP of Animal Advocacy, volunteered together before HSFM, and in 1997, decided to start their own group.  Maxine’s no-nonsense approach and incredibly generous heart combined with both their experience built this organization to be one of the most respected and successful in the area.  We as an organization have learned a great deal about how to run a rescue right and how to handle the sometimes hard and sad work that is a part of rescue.

She will be deeply missed by us all.  A memorial service will be held this Friday at 4 pm at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home. It is located on Northwest Highway next to Northpark Mall.

  • Adopt-A-Purr Fect Pet

    6/15/2008 12:00:00 AM

The Humane Society of Flower Mound will host cat-only adoption events, Adopt-A-Purr, to highlight all of the wonderful cats and kittens in its program.

At the regular Adopt-A-Pet events, the dogs tend to steal the show.  Barking and yapping dogs annoy the cats – which usually results in them sleeping the day away.  As a result, the cats aren't able to show their true personalities to the families looking for that special pet.

The cat only adopt-a-pets are designed to bring the spotlight back to the cats. Families will be welcome to sit and play with all of the kitties attending the event. The adoption counselors are the volunteers who foster, care for and love the cats that are looking for their permanent home.

Cats make great companions!  Whether you're looking for a playful, high energy kitten or a sweet lap cat that loves to snuggle, you are sure to find just the perfect furry friend waiting for you.

Each year, millions of animals find their way into animal shelters and most don't get out.  The Humane Society of Flower Mound is dedicated to promoting respectful, responsible, and compassionate relationships between animals and people.

Adopt-A-Purr events will be held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month from 11 am - 3 pm.  For more information, email us at adopt@fmhs.org, or call 972-691-7387.

The Humane Society of Flower Mound announces the return of a favorite Spring fundraiser……Flamingo Flocking!

It's fun!  It's embarrassing! It's flamingo extortion!  But it's all for a good cause.  Starting at $25.00, you can have a flock of plastic flamingos set up in an unsuspecting friend's yard.  Perfect for the proud graduate... the birthday boy or girl... the parents of that sweet new baby.... or anyone who appreciates a bit of humor!

Under cover of darkness local volunteers will set up and later remove the flamingo flock (contributions for removal gratefully accepted).  Imagine the look on your friend's face when they awake to a yard full of flamingos.
